Intrusion Detection Systems
Intrusion detection systems detect unauthorised entry into secured areas through detectors, a control panel and alarm transmission, and form graded levels of protection under VdS and EN 50131 security grades.
How it works
An intrusion detection system (IDS) uses detectors (magnetic contacts, motion, glass-break and vibration sensors) to register unauthorised entry or tampering attempts and evaluates the signals in a control panel. When triggered, the system raises a local audible/visual alarm and forwards the alert to a monitoring and alarm receiving centre or an internal guarding service.
Security grades
EN 50131 and the corresponding VdS classes distinguish security grades based on the assumed intruder profile, expertise and method of attack; higher grades require tamper-resistant components, redundant transmission paths and uninterruptible power supply. The chosen grade follows the protection requirement established in the security concept.
Insurance relevance
For higher-value risks, property insurers frequently require a certified system installed by a recognised installation company together with connection to a permanently staffed monitoring centre. Failures or poorly maintained systems are among the most common reasons why intrusions are not detected in time despite the technology being in place.
