Function

Access control systems grant or deny entry to buildings, security zones or individual rooms based on cards, PIN codes or biometric credentials, and log every granted and denied access attempt. This replaces traditional key management with a traceable authorisation system that can be revoked at any time, which is particularly valuable where personnel change frequently.

Security grades and integration

EN 60839-11 distinguishes security grades based on tamper resistance, logging and self-protection of access points. In practice, access control is usually linked to the intrusion detection system, so that armed areas are automatically locked and access attempts outside operating hours are treated as an alarm condition.

Insurance relevance

For areas holding high values or sensitive data, insurers and clients increasingly require documented, role-based access management with log review. Missing or outdated authorisations, for example after staff turnover, are among the most common organisational weaknesses identified during risk surveys.
