Lloyd's of London is an insurance marketplace in London where independent underwriting groups (syndicates) write specialty risks through brokers, rather than operating as a single unified insurance company.

Concept

Lloyd’s of London is not an insurance company in the conventional sense but an insurance marketplace where a large number of independent underwriting groups, known as syndicates, write specialty and large risks under a shared regulatory and operational framework. Each syndicate is run by a managing agent and funded by capital providers (traditionally “Names,” today predominantly institutional capital providers).

Market Structure and Access

Access to the Lloyd’s market is exclusively through accredited Lloyd’s brokers, who bring risks into the market on behalf of policyholders or primary insurers; individual syndicates frequently jointly underwrite a share of a given risk (subscription), so that a single large risk is spread across multiple capacity providers.

Relevance for Specialty Insurance

Lloyd’s has historically been, and remains today, a significant marketplace for unusual and difficult-to-standardize risks, including aviation, marine, fine art, and war risk insurance, as well as newer risk types such as cyber insurance; the central security available to policyholders is reinforced by a shared central fund, which provides an additional layer of security beyond the capital resources of the individual syndicates.
