Central Call Service of Motor Insurers
The Central Call Service of Motor Insurers is a facility run by the German Insurance Association (GDV) and German motor insurers that provides accident victims with free information on the motor liability insurer of a vehicle involved in an accident, where a legitimate interest exists.
Function
Since 1972, the Central Call Service of Motor Insurers has provided accident victims with free information, where a legitimate interest exists, on the motor liability insurer of a vehicle involved in an accident. This enables the injured party to pursue claims directly against the at-fault driver’s insurer without depending on the driver’s cooperation.
Role in the European context
Under the EU’s 4th Motor Insurance Directive, the Central Call Service also acts as the national information centre and identifies the claims representative in Germany appointed by the foreign insurer involved, whom an injured party can contact after returning to their home country.
Practical relevance
By informing the opposing insurer about a claim notification lodged with the Central Call Service, that insurer can begin claims handling at an early stage. For injured parties, the service is a low-threshold tool for quickly clarifying cross-border or unclear liability situations in road traffic.
