Applications

Water mist is particularly suited to facilities with limited water availability or high sensitivity to water damage, such as data centres, museums, machinery spaces, tunnels or cable ducts. Depending on the application, high-pressure systems with very fine droplet size or low-pressure systems with a coarser droplet spectrum are used.

Demonstrating Effectiveness

Unlike standardised sprinkler systems, water mist systems are manufacturer-specific, and their effectiveness must be separately demonstrated for each application through recognised fire test protocols. A system without a matching test approval for its intended use – such as office areas, car parks or cable ducts – provides no assured level of protection.

Insurance Relevance

Water mist is considered an alternative to sprinklers or gaseous extinguishing where water quantity, space constraints or potential consequential damage need to be limited. Underwriters require the application-specific test approval as a precondition for a risk-adequate rating and check whether the installed configuration actually matches the tested application.
