Foam Types and Systems

Depending on expansion ratio, foam is classified as low-, medium- or high-expansion. Foam-water sprinkler and foam-water spray systems combine the extinguishing action of water and foam in a single installation, while foam monitors and cannons enable large-area application, particularly in tank farms and aircraft hangars.

Agents and Environmental Considerations

The choice of foam concentrate depends on compatibility with the commodity being protected; regulatory restrictions on PFAS-containing compounds are currently accelerating the shift toward fluorine-free foams. Storage, shelf life and replenishment of the concentrate are recurring inspection points for any foam system.

Insurance Relevance

Foam systems are the standard protection for liquid and tank storage with a high fire-spread potential. Insufficient concentrate stock, degraded old stock or incorrectly set proportioners are among the most common reasons foam systems fail to perform as designed in an actual loss event.
