IFRS 17 is the international accounting standard for insurance contracts that mandates a consistent, market-consistent measurement and presentation of results over the full contract lifetime.

Concept

IFRS 17 is the accounting standard for insurance contracts published by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), mandatory for IFRS preparers since the 2023 financial year, replacing the previous transitional standard IFRS 4. The goal is a consistent, transparent, and comparable presentation of insurance contracts across different products, lines, and jurisdictions.

Measurement Models

IFRS 17 provides for three measurement approaches: the general measurement model (GMM), centered on the Contractual Service Margin (CSM); the simplified Premium Allocation Approach (PAA) for short-duration contracts; and the Variable Fee Approach (VFA) for contracts with direct participation features, as commonly found particularly in life insurance.

Impact on the Insurance Industry

The introduction of IFRS 17 required many insurers to make substantial investments in systems, processes, and actuarial modeling, as the standard mandates more granular contract grouping, explicit risk adjustments, and profit recognition spread over the contract term through the Contractual Service Margin, rather than immediate recognition of expected profit at contract inception.
