Area of Cover
The area of cover is the geographical territory defined in an international health insurance contract within which treatment is reimbursed – typically "Worldwide" or "Worldwide excluding USA", with some insurers offering regional zones – and one of the most important premium drivers in IPMI.
Function
The area of cover limits insurance protection territorially: only treatment by recognised providers within the selected territory is eligible, and treatment outside it is excluded except in emergencies. The area is chosen at inception, shown on the insurance certificate and, together with age, country of residence and benefit tier, determines the premium. By far the most expensive zone is the USA; virtually all insurers therefore offer a “Worldwide excluding USA” option that removes the US market for elective treatment and reduces the premium substantially.
Variants and Distinctions
Two options are market standard – “Worldwide” and “Worldwide excluding USA” – as found, for example, in the Bupa Global and Cigna Global wordings; some insurers add regional zones (Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific) or country-specific plans. Two extensions prevent gaps: out-of-area emergency cover for short business or leisure trips (structured by Cigna Global as “Out of Area Emergency Hospitalisation Cover” with day and monetary limits) and the evacuation benefit, which may allow transfer to a suitable hospital even outside the zone. The area of cover must be distinguished from the country of residence, which sets the rating zone, and from sanctions and travel advisory exclusions, which remove individual countries irrespective of the zone.
Practical Note
For corporate programmes with mobile staff, check that the zone covers all assignment and home-leave countries, that short US trips are caught by the emergency clause and how a mid-term zone change is handled (new medical questionnaire, premium adjustment). Regional medical inflation – between roughly 8 % in Europe and 14 % in Asia-Pacific for 2026 according to WTW – feeds directly into the premium of the selected zone.
