"body": "## Hazards from combustible waste\n\nUnsorted or uncontrolled accumulations of waste – packaging, plastics, paper, used tyres or biogenic residues – increase combustible loading, encourage self-heating through biological decomposition, and present an easily accessible target for arson. Waste compactor containers and outdoor bins placed too close to facades are also a common cause of fire spread into the building.\n\n## Protective measures\n\nKey measures include separating combustible waste fractions, maintaining adequate distances between waste containers or compactors and buildings or windows, regular documented collection intervals instead of unlimited interim storage, and limiting storage blocks to defined areas with fire compartmentation at larger recycling and sorting plants. Silos and enclosed storage vessels for combustible bulk materials additionally require early detection, for example through temperature or CO monitoring where materials are prone to self-heating.\n\n## Relevance for insurance\n\nWaste and disposal areas are frequently underestimated fire sources during risk surveys, even though they are disproportionately often the starting point of major losses. Property insurers expect documented distance and collection rules, particularly at recycling operations and sites with an elevated arson risk."
