"body": "## Purpose of subdivision\n\nAn uncontrolled fire in a large, undivided building can destroy an entire facility within a short time. Compartmentation breaks this chain reaction: walls, floors and closures with a defined fire resistance rating confine the fire to its area of origin until the fire brigade intervenes or extinguishing systems take effect. Compartment size depends on fire load, occupancy, sprinkler protection and the means-of-escape concept.\n\n## Structural implementation\n\nKey elements include fire-resistant walls and floors, protected openings (fire doors, shutters, dampers) and fire stopping of service penetrations. Any weakening of the compartment – later openings, doors held open, unprotected cable routes – negates the effectiveness of the entire compartment, which is why ongoing maintenance and inspection are as important as the original construction.\n\n## Insurance relevance\n\nCompartment size is a key parameter in loss estimation (MFL/EML): the smaller and more consistently compartments are maintained, the lower the maximum foreseeable loss and the more favourable the risk grading. During a risk survey, engineers routinely check whether the compartmentation described in the fire protection concept still matches the actual occupancy."
