"body": "## Hazard picture\n\nMany existing buildings were constructed before current seismic codes were introduced and exhibit typical weaknesses: soft storeys, inadequately anchored masonry, insufficient connection between floors and load-bearing walls, and unsecured non-structural elements and plant. Even in regions of moderate seismicity such as Switzerland, this creates significant loss potential in moderate to strong earthquakes.\n\n## Retrofitting measures\n\nRetrofitting is carried out on a risk-based, staged approach: following a condition assessment and classification within the governing seismic zone, targeted bracing, anchoring and strengthening of critical structural elements are applied. Non-structural elements that are important for operations, such as racking, tanks or building services, are additionally secured against tipping and sliding.\n\n## Insurance relevance\n\nBecause earthquakes carry high spatial accumulation potential, the availability of earthquake cover is closely tied to reinsurance capacity and robust risk modelling. Documented retrofitting measures can have a risk-reducing effect on premium, deductible and cover capacity for the affected location."
